GETTING OUR WONDER SMASHED
What can grow on the ruins? Dragging the audience into the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of decay and infernality, but also playfulness, vulnerability, and hope, “Getting Our Wonder Smashed” creates a space with its own laws of attraction and transformation where everything is suspended yet anything can happen. Using choreographic clues to set things in motion, yet escaping the logic of staged dancing, Alina Belyagina and collaborators create a performative landscape with multiple possibilities. The sound within it lives its own life but also responds to the dancers; movements, voices become entangled, trapped, and released, materials and physical objects have their own choreographic agency. Movement slowly creates space for communication: but what kind of messages can it convey? Secrets and magic spells, epic celebrations, family portraits merged with state monuments, dark vitality, evil twins, and levitating moments: what else can grow from the state of nostalgia and post- apocalyptic freedom? Are our joys inevitably exhausted? Or can we find meaning and way forward in this mess?
